Ulric Miller, 42, of Number 11 West Coast Berbice, was yesterday jailed for 12 months by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court and pleaded guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.
He had broken into the home of Kalamadeen Ali of Waterloo, Bath, West Coast Berbice, on September 24, last.
He stole one tape deck, one amplifier and one bird cage to a total value of $60,000.
The case presented by prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira was that on the day in question, Ali, who is a farmer had secured his house and had gone to his rice field at Number Two Bath back dam.
Upon his return he noticed his place broken into and upon checking he found the items missing.
He immediately reported the matter to the Fort Wellington Police station and upon further investigation he learnt that Miller had broken into his place and was seen with some of the items.
He later accosted Miller who admitted to the crime. He arrested him and took him to the station where Miller was charged.
In court the accused told the magistrate that he is a sickly man and suffers from epilepsy on a regular basis. He begged the magistrate to be lenient with him.
He further told the court that when he was arrested he took the police to the person whom he sold the items to and the things were recovered.
Prosecutor Figueira in reply told the court that the accused is a regular offender, that it is not the first time that he has been involved in crimes of this nature.
Figueira further told the court that the man is a nuisance and the court should show him no mercy.
