A Corentyne businessman will have to face a judge and jury after he was committed to stand trial in the next sitting of the Berbice High Court, this was after a prima facie was made out against him on the count of rape, committed on a 22-year-old woman on April 7, 2007.
The man, Guru Darshan Jagnarine, 33, of 72 Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, was committed at the Albion Magistrate’s Court after a trial conducted by magistrate Chandra Sohan and prosecuted by Inspector Satrohan Dayaram.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Dayaram, told the court that Jagnarine and the girl who was then 19, knew each other.
On the day in question the man went to her workplace and after inviting her out forced her into a waiting vehicle and took her to his home at Rose Hall Town where he allegedly had sex with her.
However things did not work out as planned and the matter was reported and Jagnarine was arrested and charged. He was subsequently placed on $1M bail.
