Dear Editor,
The Working People’s Alliance (WPA), joins the rest of the Caribbean family, albeit belatedly, in mourning the death of calypsonian Arrow.
Arrow had the distinction of taking the calypso to higher global heights with his pulsating hit tune – Hot Hot. Although his name became synonymous with that calypso, he recorded many other outstanding hits, including some in the social commentary mould.
Arrow, a patriotic Montserratian, was also a committed regionalist who used his voice and the calypso to advance a Pan-Caribbean outlook. His performance in Trinidad during the visit of President Barack Obama, despite his failing health, was testimony to his commitment to both the art-form and the cause of Caribbean nationhood.
To his family, his fellow Montserratians and the calypso fraternity we offer our condolences. With Arrow’s passing, Caribbean popular culture has suffered a severe loss.
