The National Exhibition Complex, Sophia, was a scene of mass confusion last evening as exhibitors struggled to complete booth preparations ahead of today’s opening of GuyExpo, the country’s largest trade and investment exposition.
Even the main roundabout, always a major attraction point for casual visitors, is incomplete, even if it is the main staging point for the government’s low carbon message.
The exhibition is being held under the theme: Expanding Investment in a stable environment.
The pavilion for manufacturers was mostly incomplete last evening, and workers were busy trying to get the booths prepared for this afternoon’s ceremonial opening.
Some of the booth spaces were not taken. The booth to the entrance of the manufacturers’ pavilion was being decorated with posters and cloth by workers of the Guyana Tourism Authority to avoid leaving any hollow space.
The other pavilions were also largely incomplete. Most booths were empty and so it was unclear if those booth spaces were taken or if the exhibitors had just not prepared them ahead of the opening.
These could be filled as the day progresses.
The country’s largest beer companies, Banks DIH and Ansa McAl, were pushed towards the entrance to the exhibition complex. They were formerly situated at the back of the exhibition complex.
Booths belong to the Ministry of Health, which would usually take up a huge space in the main pavilion has been designated their own area.
This is one of the new exhibition spaces that were created.
Security at GuyExpo has always been a concern and last evening law enforcement officers were seen with members of the planning committee going through security strategies.
GuyExpo is touted as the place where local manufacturers of goods and services gain new markets and form new linkages, local and overseas, but it has also been criticized as not being properly designed and ends up being an occasion just for a weekend lime.
GuyExpo began ten years ago in 1995 as a biennial activity by the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-INVEST), the Guyana Manufacturers’ Association (GMA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce. It became an annual event in 2004 and is the longest sustained exhibition in the Caribbean region.
