Guyana’s human rights obligations vindicated in Geneva – Dr. Luncheon

Guyana made significant progress in its submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR), in Geneva Switzerland when its position took centre stage, said Cabinet Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon, yeserday.
Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail Teixeira was credited by Cabinet for eloquently representing Guyana’s position, on over 50 recommendations submitted by participating states.
Aspects of her presentation highlighted Guyana’s inclusive model of governance, participatory democracy, poverty reduction efforts, including reduction of infant child and maternal mortality, interventions in health, education, water and also the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), Dr Luncheon said.
Participating states including international organizations and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) at the session all endorsed Guyana’s position and according to Teixeira the sentiment was that Guyana over the period of review had “subscribed to its human right obligations to its people and had adhered to the provisions to international and other legal instruments.”
Ms Teixeira had reported that  some of the countries endorsing Guyana’s position were Algeria, Brazil, Cuba, China, Norway, Libya, Chile, Slovenia, Spain, France, Pakistan, Bolivia, Mexico, Germany, Argentina, The Maldives, Uruguay, Australia, Latvia, Italy, the United States of America, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat at the Office of the President Dr Roger Luncheon said the contents of Teixeira’s presentation will be presented to the National Assembly.
“Cabinet on Ms Teixeira’s presentation concluded that the nation will be properly advised by Ms Teixeira and that will be a signal that this government’s attention to human rights will continue and even more importantly… respect for human rights will be a permanent feature of the administration’s mandate,” Dr. Luncheon said.
Teixeira, was part of a three-man delegation Headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, that visited Geneva for the UPR.
GUYANA was among 16 countries presenting reports to the UNHRC in response to a number of issues raised at the UPR last May.
