– Ministry of Labour looks to intervene
The Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union (GB&GWU) has rejected an offer of a 2.5 per cent pay increase for workers attached to bauxite shipper Oldendorff Carriers and the Union stands poised to strike if a reasonable offer is not put on the table.
Guyana is the fourth largest supplier of bauxite to the United States. The union wants higher pay and better terms from German transporter Oldendorff Carriers, which ships out between 2.0 million and 2.5 million tonnes of the ore each year.
The Union rejected the increase offered when it met with officials of the company Tuesday. As it stands, the negotiations are back to square one and the Ministry of Labour may be looking to convene another meeting to see if an agreement can be reached.
Chief Labour Officer, Yoganand Persaud, was present at Tuesday’s meeting between the Union and Oldendorff.
Oldendorff Carriers employs more than 100 people in the country, where it has operated since 2006 under an 11-year deal with Russian aluminum giant UC RUSAL which runs Guyana’s bauxite mines through a subsidiary.
Leslie Gonsalves, head of the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union, has accused Oldendorff of refusing to negotiate on issues including unpaid bonuses.
Gonsalves had also written to the Ministry of Labour claiming that Oldendorff has threatened not to rehire workers in 2011 if they strike.
The Union and company have been locked in negotiations for increased wages and improve working conditions for year 2010, since June.
After the parties failed to reach an agreement, the union wrote the Ministry of Labour requesting conciliation under its chairmanship.
