‘Golden Jags’ to intensify preparations for Digicel Caribbean Cup

Following a creditable 1-1 draw against Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors on Sunday last at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ will focus on their next big assignment, the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 early in the new month.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover disclosed that encampment will commence on October 1 ahead of the DCC and the focus will be on whipping the team into a higher level of fitness and being more disciplined tactically.
“During the time we will spend together before travelling to Suriname, we intend to focus on having a fitter unit and will also do lots of sessions on finishing. The time will not be much but we will try to do our best and be ready to win Group C against Suriname, St. Lucia and the Netherlands Antilles.”
While not being as active as Trinidad and Tobago in the past six weeks or so, Guyana did show that they have what it takes to compete against the powerhouses of the Caribbean. The Trinis, in five matches before coming to Guyana, lost to Jamaica and Panama, were held to a 0-0 draw by Belize but rebounded to beat Antigua and Barbuda 1-0 and St. Lucia 3-0 in a tri nation’s tournament hosted by the Antiguans.
Dover noted that he is on the hunt for about two more strikers to bolster his forward line since he does not have too many options in this area. “At the moment we have Anthony Abrams and Devon Millington but I would like to have a few more players in this department.”
The long standing Head Coach also disclosed that he wants to strengthen his midfield and is expecting to have the services of Chris Nurse who is presently playing with the Puerto Rico Islanders and Sean Cameron who campaigns with Miami FC. “We need players of this caliber who are exposed and aware of the level of intensity that is need when working in the engine room.”
The right full back position is also a challenge for Dover who stated that ever since the passing of Leslie Holligan, they have been in search of someone to hold down that spot.
“Lots of thinking and focus has gone into arriving at the right combination of players to represent Guyana and take back to the top and beyond in the Region and the World. The GFF I must say has been doing their best for us and we look forward to the players to continue striving for excellence for their country.”
Dover, who worked under former Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz, noted his satisfaction to some extent with the performance of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ against Trinidad but opined that they could have done better.
“We must aim for winning matches and not just settle for draws. Given the preparedness of Trinidad and our own, twelve days as opposed to over six weeks, our boys must be complemented for the fight that they showed against the Soca Warriors and for making the fans happy.”
Dover also took some time to express gratitude to the fans and supporters for coming out in such numbers to support and urge them on”
“On behalf of the players, I would like to say thank you to all who came out and supported us, we look forward to their continued support for the upcoming Digicel Cup.”
Guyana will face St. Lucia in their first game on October 13 which is the opening game of the Group at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo, Suriname. The Surinamese will face the Netherlands Antilles in the main clash on the same evening.
Next they will face the Netherlands Antilles on October 15 and Suriname in the final group game two days later.
