Guyana host Jamaica, USVI & Grenada from Oct. 6
By Franklin Wilson
The battle lines will be drawn at the regional level once again from October 6 when Guyana play host to Jamaica, Grenada and the United States Virgin Islands in opening round qualification for the FIFA World Under-20 competition.
The junior ‘Golden Jaguars’ will be back in camp from today as they seek to build on their solid performance against the Trinidad and Tobago’s ‘Soca Warriors’ on Sunday last at National Stadium Providence, the ending in a 0-0 stalemate.
Head Coach of the Guyana team Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite summed up the performance of his charges as very encouraging stating that prior to the encounter that he was not interested in the result but rather was aiming to have a good understanding of where Guyana is at this level against the Trinidadians who competed at the 2009 Under-20 World Cup held in Italy which was the 17th edition of the tournament.
The Trinis ended at the bottom of Group A having lost to Egypt (1-4), Italy (1-2) and drew with Paraguay 0-0. The cup was won by Ghana after they defeated Brazil on penalties in the final, becoming the first African team to have won the tournament.
Two of the players who played in the game were part of the World Cup squad, the Captain Sheldon Bateau and Akeem Adams.
Braithwaite speaking with Kaieteur Sport revealed that the T&T clash allowed him and Technical staff to identify a number of areas where they would have to work on ahead of the CFU qualifying competition which will be played at the National Stadium, Providence.
“This camp will be much more intense and in depth. I think the game against Trinidad assisted us to appreciate where we are at the moment and it was a good test for our boys especially from the psychological aspect. Our players played with a lot of heart and fight and were determined to match their rivals in every area.”
Braithwaite also commended his boys for heading the ball well throughout the game. He also pointed out that the focus during this camp will also be on fitness which is vital for everything else to be successful.
“Fitness is key as it will help their all round ability. We will definitely be working to produce a more cohesive unit.”
The same that that has been in camp before will be retained as will the overseas based players in Nicholas Parbhudial and Kevin Beaton of the USA and England based Kyle Miranda who did not play in the T&T clash due to blisters on his feet.
Guyana’s Captain Colin Nelson who played excellently for his country will be aiming to go from strength to strength. Nelson also did well for the senior team last October in Suriname when the Guyanese for the first time won a senior tournament outside these shores.
A number of practice matches have been arranged to keep the local squad as active as possible and to ensure that they are ready to win the group next month.
They will take on Fruta Conquerors tomorrow and Pele on Sunday. Training sessions will be held twice daily.
