Dear Editor,
On Sunday evening last, about 19.00 hrs, we boarded a minibus BMM 8529 at the Parika bus park. We were destined for Georgetown. During the course of the journey, the driver stopped to pick two more passengers at Meten-Meer-Zorg village, West Coast Demerara. The bus was already filled to its capacity and thus some passengers were unwilling to accommodate even more for the fixed fare to Georgetown.
The driver then immediately abandoned the vehicle with all passengers aboard (and conductor) leaving the bus in a private entrance in the vicinity of the village Post Office. The owner of the property then pushed the bus with passengers away from his entrance and unto the carriageway.
We contacted Police Emergency for assistance and were told that patrols were already on duty from the Parika/Leonora Police Stations. We sat and waited but no patrol arrived. Meanwhile a few passengers left the bus. After some 45 minutes the driver reappeared and, with the intervention of a gentleman, decided to continue the journey with the passengers.
We, the remaining passengers, did not allow ourselves to be driven by an obviously angry driver. The driver said to be named one ‘Michael’ showed no concern for the safety of his passengers when he abandoned the vehicle and caused great discomfort and inconvenience in waiting time to passengers including young children.
What action will be taken against such an errant driver? Is this supposed to be accepted as a standard of minibus transportation service in Guyana?
F. Ogle and other passengers
