Dear Editor,
I am a young man in this potentially great country of Guyana. I look around in this country and I wonder what is going on.
The economy seems to be declining. Goods and services are getting more and more expensive. The authority doesn’t appear to see it fit to match salaries with expenses. It’s so frustrating. The job market is almost non-existent. No one is willing to invest in this country. Yet those in authority say that all is well.
Every other day you see a new law that comes out that doesn’t make any sense at all. For example the one that restricts TV stations from broadcasting certain songs that are made in Trinidad citing that they are promoting so called “rum drinking”, so say the “experts”. I wonder what ever happened to the “Gaza and Gully songs” that are promoting young girls to have sexual relations with members of these gangs that are being formed under these Gaza and Gully pretext?
What about all the songs that promote the smoking of “weed”?
On second thoughts as we are going this route let’s ban the broadcasting of all songs. But guess what, these same songs that are banned from broadcast are on DVDs and on CDs to be bought. So what is the use Mr. Experts?
Another thing that frustrates me is the fact that public servants work their butts off and they have to live on salaries that cannot even begin to meet their expenses. Since the implementation of value added taxes, the prices for goods and services have increased by 100 per cent. According to those in authority this isn’t so. Guess what there seem to be a disconnection between the consumers and those implementing these policies.
When it comes to elections, this country becomes divided racially. The majority of East Indians vote for the PPP\C, the reason they say, is because of what happened during the reign of Mr. Burnham. The other thing the Indians say is that they would prefer to suffer under an Indian man than a Black man. This kind of thing amazes me because no one votes on the issues and the performances of those in and out of offices.
If anyone tries to debate with a PPP\C supporter all a person would hear from that supporter when that person highlights the ills of today, “Look what they used to do when they were in power.” My question to the PPP\C supporters is, because one political party did wrong does that give the one in office the right to do wrong too?
I, as a young man, honestly don’t care what happened in the past. I am more concerned with what is going on today and what are you doing to build a future. So stop telling me about what someone else did when that person was in office and start addressing the concerns of citizens today.
I would also like to mention a website that has already been in the news already http://liveinguyana.blogspot.com . Anyone who tries to have an independent view on the issues of the day is being defamed and called all kinds of indecent names. For example there is one of the headlines that are called “S*^@T of the day”. This is probably the dirtiest politics in the world in my view. I am sure that once you publish this letter I will be called that too.
There are so many things that I would love to mention. But the most frustrating thing for me is the fact that even though there are so many people writing letters of concern and frustration. Not one of our voices will be heard by those in authority. That fact alone makes one feel like he\she is living without a reason or purpose in this country.
And they wonder why the entire population in this country would rather live in another country (even those same PPP\C supporters).
Our voices are not heard.
