Mr. Ed Miliband won the contest to be the leader of the British Labour Party. As in Trinidad in the UNC with the defeat of Basdeo Panday, it was pure, unadulterated freedom on show. It was philosophy in motion, pure and simple. The member of the Labour Party voted for its leader. Miliband won by one (yes, one) percent. How can any politician in a modern world where human efforts are unceasing in the endeavours to make the world freer want to lead a nation and refuses in a most frenetic way to test his/her popularity before his/her own general membership?
There is a but however. But even if such a politician wants to avoid an open contest, how can you as a voter, go into a polling station and in a most conscious way put a man or woman in the presidency of your country that was afraid to face an, open democratic challenge from his/her own peers? Do you feel your country deserves such a leader? Don’t you want to see your nation follow in the footsteps of other great lands that have open rivalry where members of the party to which all of them belong get the final say by the principle of one person one vote?
What is so sick or diseased about Guyana is that a majority of modern countries can adhere to the democratic pathway whereby political parties elect their leaders through the franchise of every party member, but we here in Guyana have to accept the siege mentality of our political parties (namely the PPP and PNC) where a core of the leading cabals meet in a secret room and determine who will be numero uno. This is what is going to happen inside the PPP as that core group gets down to arranging who will enter the election race for them next year.
The PPP makes you truly sick to the core of your soul as you listen to all its leaders speak on freedom and democracy. Each time, without exception, the hierarchy of the PPP opens their mouth to talk about democracy, they tell us about the ocean of freedoms they brought since they came to power in 1992. But yet these “phenomenal”, great”, “magnificent”, democrats are pathologically shameless monsters. They cannot bring themselves to democratize their own party muchless an entire country.
So the party’s Central Committee of 35 persons will select the presidential candidate for next year’s national poll. Before the PPP does this, we should ask the leaders how many members the organization has. Wait and you will see the flow of asininity. The figure that will come tumbling out of their mouths will be ten thousand. They will be barefaced, stupid and crass enough to call a figure of ten thousand. Then, when you say to them, how can less than one percent of your membership choose your leader; the answer will be that it is a democratic process.
As soon as the anointed one’s name is announced, it will be accompanied by statements of how great the PPP is, the people’s faith in it, and the fantastic plans of freedom and democracy it has. One has to be an animal to listen to or read such morbid foolishness and not feel pity for Guyana. All over the world, political organizations go to their membership when one leader dies or steps down and the time comes to choose another. Not so in the PPP. The Jaganite generation who now inherit the seat of power at Freedom House, and in Government, has offered an explanation as to why they would adhere to the convention of 35 persons selecting the presidential candidate. Brace yourself for unprecedented asininity not replicated elsewhere in the world.
Freedom House kings have told the media that such a method has worked well in the past and there is no need to change it.
Can you believe such jackass reasoning? Life is about the search for knowledge. Knowledge is about unlocking mysteries and uncertainties so mankind can learn more about his universe and make his/her life more meaningful. New discoveries don’t take civilization back. It takes it further. If you got up from your seat to change the channel, a remote does it for you now.
How can any fool say that getting up worked for them and they don’t want a remote control.
Let’s end with the animal. When you go and vote for a weak leader that can’t face his/her own members, how do you face your children who belong to the modern generation that understand what freedom is?
