Discarded national wicketkeeper/batsman Delbert Hicks sent a strong message to the national selectors on Thursday last when he blasted an aggressive unbeaten 96 off 30 balls to lead his team to an easy victory over arch rivals Port Mourant Karibee Rice Cricket Club at the area ‘H’ Ground.
The two teams were vying for the Rose Hall Town 40th Anniversary Twenty20 trophy in a specially arranged match by the Rose Hall Town Council in observance of the Township’s Anniversary.
Watched by a sizeable crowd and in a party atmosphere, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets won the toss and decided to bat. They lost seasoned opener Renwick Batson via the run out route for 2 at 16-1 in the 3rd over but the teenage pair of Clinton Pestano and Eon Hooper added 50 for the next wicket before Pestano was trapped LBW by off spinner Rajendra Latcha for 42 (4×4, 1×6).
Hooper and Jason Sinclair took the score to 80-3 in the 11th over before Hooper was caught on the square leg boundary off the bowling of Andre Percival for 30 (2×6, 1×4). Hicks then joined Sinclair and in a perfect display of brutal power hitting took the Port Mourant bowling attack apart as the pair added 116 in an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 116 off just 9 overs.
Hicks was left not out on 96 (11×6, 4×4) while Sinclair was on 27 (3×4) as RHT Gizmos & Gadgets amassed 196-3. Percival and Latcha took one wicket each for the visitors.
In response, Port Mourant lost the experienced Moshin Perkhan for 4 at 4-1 in the first over, caught behind off pacer Eon Hooper. Fellow opener Devindra Thakurdeen was then bowled first ball by Renwick Batson at 6-2 in the next over.
Port Mourant never recovered and at the end of their 20 overs were 128-9. The margin of defeat would have been much larger but wicket keeper Tony McKenzie batting at No. 9 blasted a quick 22* (2×6, 2×4) off the last two overs.
Earlier, Rajiv Ivan scored 35 (2×6, 3×4) before he was removed by medium pacer Shailendra Hardyal, Shameer Khan 27 and Andre Percival 12. Bowling for RHT Gizmos & Gadgets Shawn Perreira 2-11 from 3 overs, Hardyal 2-15, Eon Gibson 2-29 and Loyden Lewis 2-30.
Chairman of the Rose Hall Town Interim Management Committee Mr. B. Somrah before the match told both teams that his township was proud to achieve 40 years. The Twenty20 match, Mr. Somrah stated was one of several activities planned for a weeklong celebration.
