On Sunday afternoon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, a small but appreciative crowd was treated to some competitive Kata and Kumite contests at the Guyana Karate Federation Open Adult Tournament.
Following the lead of this year’s Master Camp, the GKF, allowed the top junior karatekas to participate in the adult Kata individual and team events. Current Caribbean U17 and Pan am U17 Kata gold medalist, Samuel Ming (YMCA), showed his form and after 3 rounds of elimination, met with seasoned adult campaigner, Patrick Cheeks (YMCA), in the final of the Male Adult Individual Kata event.
This proved to be close contest. First up was Cheeks who did an excellent demonstration of the Nijushiho Kata and was much appreciated by the spectators. Ming then stepped up and performed his most recently learned Sochin Kata. His power and focus were evident and gave him the edge to take the gold amid loud cheering from the crowd. The other junior, Eric Hing, also performed very well and took the bronze from Liam Wong after losing to Cheeks in the semi-final. Ming defeated Liam Wong in the other semifinal.
Ming then teamed up with Cheeks and Kyle Isaacs (YMCA dojo) for Team Kata but were edged out by the Team of Guy Low, Eric Hing and Roger Peroune of the Guyana Karate College. The crowd was a bit surprised when the split decision of the judges was made as the College Team did seem quite out of sync from the very start when Team leader Guy Low began before his teammates. There were many other times when their timing went off relative to the GJKA team who had far less synchronization problems under the leadership of Isaacs.
The Individual Kumite saw the emergence of a new champion in the under 75 kg class. Roger Peroune (GKC) showed determination, speed and grit from the inception and with the crowd behind him he worked his way to the final where he met Delon Thorne (GWKA) from the Wadu Ryu style. This was a very close contest but in the end Peroune took the gold. Thorne may have been a bit tired as he had some long close matches on his way to the final. Manzoor Ali (GWKA), who lost a close one to Peroune in his semi-final, defeated Jason Jerrick (YMCA) for the bronze.
In the Heavier class, over 75 kg, the favourite, Keith Beaton, did have to dig deep as his training and team mates did not make it easy for him. He and Patrick Cheeks met in the final and with the crowd supporting Cheeks, Beaton had to call on his experience to pull through to take the gold. Kyle Isaacs who defeated Roy Lachana (GKC) in the first round and lost to cheeks in the second round, went on to win the bronze from Malcolm Francis (YMCA).
The Team Kumite event had 3 entries. The GWKA Team of Manzoor Ali, Shahab Zaman and Kevin Isaacs drew the bye and the GJKA Team after defeating the GKC Team by 2 nil went on to defeat the GWKA team also by 2 nil. Beaton (YMCA), Francis (YMCA) and Cheeks (YMCA) represented the GJKA Team while Peroune, Wong and Roland Fanfair made up the Karate College Team.
