In an action packed day in hot sunshine Miss Republic of the Colin Elcock stable showed that it is the boss in the horseracing circle as it surmounted the opposition for a convincing victory in the feature event when the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club and Sport Facilities held its annual Champion of Champions One Day horse Race meet on Sunday at the Clubs Track Alness, Corentyne, Berbice.
It was a clinical display by the champion horse and it was no coincidence that the owner named the animal Miss Republic as it continued to rule the roost in Guyana, churning out victory after victory.
Ridden by Daniel ‘buck man’ Flores the animal left the starting gate like a bullet and it was no secret that Miss Republic was the horse to beat. And like a true champion the animal led for most of the race and few contenders came up to challenge. Down the home stretch Night Crescendo with Yap Drepaul on the mount made a move on the outside; however it was the veteran Delmur Gold with Paul Delph in the saddle running on the outside with a final surge that burst into second place, behind Miss Republic for a one two finish for the Elcock stable.
Night Crescendo held on for third and Pinch the cash fourth in the 1300M event for the $400,000 first prize and Banks DIH trophy compliments of pacesetters Banks DIH Limited.
The RCMTC already having the reputation of being one of the fastest tracks in the country and being dry, most of the races were fast. A number of animals could not take the heat generated either from the races itself or the sun and several threw their jockeys in trying to keep up with the pace.
The Three years old event for animals Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies was also very competitive as Gens Pride with Kumar Singh in the saddles of the Rumour’s Racing Stable rocketed down the homestretch to overtake front runner and old rival Peaceful of the Elcock stable with Flores in control as it took the winning $300,000 and the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club Trophy in the 1300M race. Peaceful did most of the front running, but could not hold off a surging Gens Pride. Stormy Lass and Got to Go rounded out the money.
Tropical Passion also of the Rumours Racing Stable and ridden by Kumar Singh showed that it is ready for any condition with a blistering home run to take the Guyana Livestock and Pet Shop Trophy and the $220,000 winnings in the E3 event also over 1300M. Mamzelle of the Poonai stable was out in front for most of the event and when it looked like it would have scored it first victory it was denied by the inform tropical Passion. Face the Music rolled in third ahead of Sweet Revenge.
Apostle of the Wayne Nelson Stable with Kumar Singh on the perch was all fire with a blistering run down the home stretch as it blazed past its opponents and into glory for its first win in the Two year old event for Guyana Bred Horses over1100M. $180,000 along with The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Trophy was the winning prize. Kevin, Water Wave and Speed Vision were among those that wobbled under the pressure.
Stormy Deal of the Romel Jagmohan stables blew up its opponents in the G class event, a big upset, to take the winner’s purse worth $150,000 and the Sham Chattergoon trophy. The animals took the lead from down the back stretch and never looked back as jockey Navin Ally kept spurring his charge to victory, leaving its more illustrious opponents in its wake, Face the Music, Pegasus Rising and Got to Go were among those that faded in the 1200M gallop.
There was a win for Casino Royale in the H2 event as it got the better of Dream Girl, Stormy Water and Amy Jane for the $140,000 first prize and the Chen Singh trophy over 1200M.
The I2 and lower 1400M event as usual was full of skills and spills and a continuous call for the use of more technology in the horseracing arena. A large field of 12 took to the track during which a number of riders came tumbling to the ground, but they all skillfully avoided any serious injuries.
As the animals came blazing for the finishing pole it was Spread the News and Channel Boy that crossed the line together. After some deliberation the judges awarded the top position to Spread the News with Kumar Singh on the mount of the Leary Robinson stable owner horse. Miami Vice and Savion were the others that placed. The win was worth $120,000 and the Ray’s Auto Spares trophy.
Black Beauty of the Collins stable ridden by Thakurdyal returned to winning ways as it captured the J class contest from Try Again. The win was worth $90,000 and the Bobby Vaughn trophy over 1200M.
The top stable on show was the Elcock stable while jockey Kumar Singh with four wins racing away with the top jockey prize. Apprentice rider Andy Williams was adjudged the top young rider on show.
Over 65 horses took part in the day’s proceedings, which by large were incident, free and saw some $3.5M in cash and prizes on offer.
During the event one minute silence was observed for the late Lillian Crawford wife of Senior Council, horserace magnate and founding member of the RCMTC&SF Marcel Crawford and mother of Attorney-at-law Ryan Crawford who passed away recently.
