Drunk driver fined for accident with Police Commissioner’s vehicle

A drunk driver was slapped with a $7,500 fine yesterday because he collided on Sunday night with a car in which Police Commissioner Henry Greene was travelling.
A police press release identified the accused as 34-year-old Zaheer Waheed of Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
The accident occurred around 19:21 hrs on Sheriff Street and resulted in damage to motorcar PLL 5392 assigned to the Office of the Commissioner of Police.
The release stated that Commissioner Greene was being driven by Corporal 19137 Henry, south along the eastern carriageway of Sheriff Street, and had reached Pike Street, Campbellville, when the accident occurred.
It is alleged that Waheed, who was proceeding west, failed to stop at the junction and drove into the path of the Commissioner’s vehicle. Both vehicles were damaged.
The drivers were tested for alcohol and Waheed was found to have 175 microgrammes, while the Commissioner’s driver registered zero microgrammes.
Waheed was yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Chandra Sohan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and was fined $7,500.00.
