Police on the East Coast of Demerara are maintaining their posture with regards to the seizure of a firearm and the detention of its owner.
However, the man is threatening to involve a senior government functionary to resolve whatever action the police have taken.
The firearm owner, said to be a building contractor, had discharged his weapon, wounding one of his employees, before threatening an Amerindian Village Captain who had intervened.
The incident occurred last Saturday at the Moraikobai Mission in the Mahaicony River.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the firearm holder was contracted to build a school in the Mahaicony River District, near the Amerindian Mission. On Saturday, the contractor was engaged in an argument with one of his employees over payment.
This newspaper understands that the employee armed himself with a piece of wood but as he was about to attack the contractor, another employee subdued him.
Seizing the opportunity, the contractor who by then had armed himself with his firearm, lashed the employee on his head with the weapon.
But he did not stop there; he discharged a round from his .32 pistol which struck the other employee in his right hand.
The Village Captain upon hearing the commotion, came out to investigate but was threatened by the contractor, forcing him to back off.
The police were contacted and they travelled several miles by boat to the
area where they arrested the contractor and seized his weapon. At first the man denied shooting his employee, claiming that the wound was sustained from a screwdriver.
But a medical officer in the river confirmed that the employee did receive a gunshot wound.
After spending the night in the Mahaicony River investigating the incident, the police along with the suspect travelled out on Sunday. They placed the contractor into the lock-ups.
The angry contractor then reportedly began threatening at an inspector who had led the team into the river to arrest him.
Kaieteur News understands that the man’s wife who turned up at the Mahaicony Police Station was instructed by her husband to contact a senior Government official who he claimed was his relative.
The woman also met with Divisional Commander Gavin Primo who insisted that her husband will be kept in police custody until he appears in court to answer charges.
This newspaper also understands that the Commander informed the woman that the firearm will remain in the possession of the police until the matter has been properly determined.
