– Minister Manickchand
Child Protection Week 2010 came to a close with a child concert at the Botanical Gardens Saturday.
As part of highlighting the week, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security shared information to the public to promote the awareness of child protection under the theme “Caring Communities Raise Caring Children; Protect then now.”
At the Botanical Gardens children were treated to dances, free pony rides, refreshments and other forms of entertainment. The Ministry intends to make this an annual feature on their calendar of activities, one of the organisers said.
According to Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, Government has been making strident efforts to put systems in place that will see Guyana’s children being protected from all forms of abuse.
Child Protection Week was designated to heighten the public’s awareness, the Minister said. She added that the activities were replicated across the ten regions and attracted the attention of thousands of parents and guardians.
“Child protection is not a one day or one week thing; it is an everyday thing and the Ministry will not stop combing the country until every child is safe,” Minister Manickchand pledged.
UNICEF’s Director of Child Protection, Doris Roos, said that UNICEF will continue to support Government’s efforts to make Guyana a safe haven for childcare and similar concerts will be held in other regions.
During the past week, the Ministry interacted with society by erecting passer-by booths at various locations in the city. Some of the booths were placed at the City Mall, La Penitence Market, Main Street, Water Street, and Regent Street.
There were 300 packages with information on child protection and the rights of the child. These were given freely to drivers and other civilians.
According to a source from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, some 9,500 plus persons in the city accessed booths to be informed about Child Protection and the various rights of the child.
It was further disclosed that every month a chosen community would be visited to highlight various issues and to educate the community on the basis of Child Protection.
According to the Child Protection Agency, Child Protection in its widest sense is a term used to describe the actions that individuals, organisations, communities, and countries take to protect children from acts of maltreatment, neglect and exploitation.
Some of the abuse may be neglect and negligent treatment, child sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual exploitation.
Child Protection Week is observed in over 120 countries. In 2004 Guyana observed the activity for the first time under the direction of the Human Services and Social Security Ministry.
