Barama worker’s death…
The mother of Barama Timber Company labourer Jason Fraser, whose remains were found in a wood shredder, has alleged that the firm has offered her a meagre sum as compensation for her son’s death.
Sandra Parris told Kaieteur News that she has been offered three years of her son’s monthly salary. Jason earned $25,000 a month.
According to her, she refused the offer, since her son’s life is worth much more than what the company is offering.
Ms. Parris said that she accompanied a company manager to the veneer factory in Buckhall last Thursday.
She was allowed to see the machine in which her 19-year-old son’s mangled body was found.
Parris revealed that she requested that workers place a pig in the machine to convince her that the shredder was capable of doing what it did to her son.
“I asked the manager to demonstrate with a pig to see if the same machine can do what it did to my son, but he declined”.
She was critical of the police who are conducting the investigation, since she believes that much more could have come out of the probe.
The veneer factor at Buckhall was closed for few weeks after the incident but recently resumed operations.
On September 2, Fraser’s remains were pulled from the wood shredding machine, three days after he was reported missing. Fraser had been employed at Barama’s Buckhall operations for about two months.
His father, James Fraser, has still insisted that things don’t “add up” in his son’s death. He told reporters that he believes his son was murdered.
