The 9mm pistol that was found in a vegetable garden in Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice on Friday has been confirmed as that assigned to a police rank.
The weapon went missing last month but the rank from the Tactical Services Unit to whom it was assigned and who was performing anti crime duties in the Ancient County, never reported the loss.
A senior official in the Guyana Police Force confirmed that the rank did not report the loss of the weapon.
The loss was only discovered when his superior made routine checks on the weapons issued to the ranks under his control.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the rank indicated that he did not tell his superiors since he was afraid of the consequences and was desperately hoping to retrieve it.
The senior official indicated that both the errant rank and his superior have been transferred to the city where they are facing disciplinary charges.
Kaieteur News understands that after the weapon was discovered missing, an intense investigation was launched.
This led to the arrest of two men, one of whom took the police to the spot where the weapon was stashed.
The man has denied knowing the police rank and is claiming that he found the weapon and buried it.
Unlike the cop and his immediate superior who are facing disciplinary charges, the man is likely to be arraigned before the court on a criminal charge.
Meanwhile, this newspaper had inadvertently listed the man who was charged with the weapon possession as Timothy Sampson, instead of Anthony Chan, called Tony.
Sampson is facing charges for the illegal possession of a cache of arms including two AK-47 assault rifles and an Uzi submachine gun, which were recovered by police in Berbice earlier last week.
