The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) was facilitated in two separate meetings with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and several developmental aspects of the sport was discussed.
Kaieteur Sport understands that one of the major subjects that engaged Anthony was the GTTA’s Strategic Plan, which the minister believed must be realistic. The GTTA meeting with the culture and sport minister occurred on Friday last at his Main Street office.
General Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe related yesterday that Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, who is also the President of the table tennis association, updated Anthony on their plan for the remainder of the year and the Strategic Plan.
“The formulation of a new and realistic Strategic Plan which would cover all the aspects outlined and aims at improving the institutional strengthening of the sport and include training of coaches, and a Coaches Accreditation System was tabled,” Munroe noted.
Among those goals outlined in the meeting was the association’s plan for the formation of a few Sub-Committees that would establish a direct relationship with other parts of the region, which is part of the much-anticipated decentralisation programme.
The decentralisation aspect of the Strategic Plan would also look at the Table Tennis For Schools and Communities Programme with a vision to assist schools, clubs and communities with all the technical tools necessary for the development of the sport.
The table tennis also shared their intention of re-drafting the association’s constitution since their current constitution was described as “archaic in nature”. In terms of technology, the GTTA want to have its website and a News Bulletin urgently developed.
Continuing with the other areas that were discussed, Munroe informed that an Ideal Athlete Plan for the national team, talent identification and scholarship came up as well as the construction of a special facility for table tennis to be housed independently.
“The Minister outlined that he was enthused with the new leadership within table tennis and was happy to formulate a new partnership with the GTTA since he felt the sport has a unique faculty to transcend many boundaries in Guyana,” Munroe indicated.
It was disclosed that the minister pledged his ministry’s support for the new vision of the GTTA and the development of its initiatives since he indicated it was his Ministry’s plan to concentrate its effort on assisting associations with more development.
Anthony reportedly stated that his Ministry’s and the association plans and goals are intertwined and that he saw his Ministry’s role as creating an enabling environment for sports to develop. He said that he would like every association to tap into his ministry.
Kaieteur Sport will report on the other part of the GTTA Meeting with Anthony and the association’s meeting with Kumar in a separate articles.Guyana Table Tennis Association, Henry Greene (third, right) and his Executive on Friday at the minister’s Main Street office.
