– several injured
Several passengers are nursing injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after minibus BMM 8590 ploughed into a Norton Street drain between Louisa Row and Hardina Street, Wortmanville.
Eyewitnesses said that the minibus tried to avoid colliding with a Honda Civic, PGG 1528, yesterday. Nothing happened to the car.
The driver of the bus, Seon Caesar, 35, of Stevedore Housing Scheme was the most seriously injured and was taken for a CT scan. Up to press time doctors were battling to save his life.
According to an eyewitness, the minibus was travelling at a fast pace heading east on Norton Street, while trying to overtake a car. At the same time the Honda Civic was heading west. The minibus lost control when it swerved out of the path of the car and ripped up bridges that spanned the drain before coming to rest on its side after it ploughed into the drain.
“All I hear was a hard screech and the impact. People pitch out the window and landed far away from the bus….One was in the trench; some people really get injured.”
The eyewitness explained that public spirited citizens assisted with placing the bus on its wheels to retrieve the driver who was covered in blood.
Among the injured were Tekita Cinnamon, 20, of Ruimveldt; Julie Corevea, 21, of Diamond, East Bank Demerara; Delon Mentore, 18, of Sideline Dam, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara; Shana Duncan,31, of Alberttown; Khashan Yhap, 13, of Princes Street, Lodge; Rayneim Guage, 17, of Princes Street, Lodge; Ray Peresta,27, of Tuschen, West Coast Demerara; and Eumal Granger,15 of Mandela Avenue.
At the scene of the accident, many residents were forced into action to assist the injured, many of whom were trapped in the vehicle.
