All roads lead to the Guyana National stadium providence today when neighbours Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana clash in the inaugural President’s Cup Football matches, promoted by the Guyana Football Federation and the Kashif & shanghai Organisation.
Rivalry between these two nations has always been fierce over the years with today’s double showdown expected to be no different.
Yesterday, both teams were seen going through the final stages of preparations at the Stadium. Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Wayne Dover in looking ahead to today’s big clash noted that he expects both teams to aim for a win.
Dover cited that fact that the Trinis have been able to play a string of warm up games with mixed results, losing to Jamaica and Panama, drawing with Belize before rebounding to win against Antigua & Barbuda and St. Lucia. “I expect them to come with their tails in the air and we have to be very careful with their confidence because with that level they will feel that they can come and win in our back yard but we are very prepared and ready for the battle at hand and we will give the Guyanese public a performance they will be proud of.”
Commenting on the gelling of the team, Dover said, “You know that has not been difficult because the guys are big and mature; adjusting quite quickly to the team tactics and I can say that we have done well in the last couple of sessions and the Technical staff is backing our boys to do Guyana proud.”
Dover is urging the fans, supporters and general public to come out and rally behind their team like never before.
“There are going to be moments when we will be on the back foot in the game but you still have to be shouting and cheering us on, likewise there will be moments when we will be in control and you will have to urge us on. We want the fans to be there for us as we will try our best to give a performance that all
can be satisfied with.”
Head Coach of the Under-20 team Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite stated that his charges are up to the task of taking on a Trinidad side that they expect to be strong.“We are looking forward to this challenge against Trinidad. The result does not matter for us as we are preparing for competition in the CFU World Under-20 qualifying competition so we are using this encounter to asses where we are.”
The senior teams are preparing for the Digicel Caribbean Cup which is set to kick off on October 2.
Fans are once again reminded to wear yellow or gold I support of the ‘Golden Jaguars’.
Action kicks off at 16:00hrs with an Under-17 game between association sides from Georgetown and Upper Demerara which would be followed by the Under-20 and senior matches respectively.
