St Gabriel’s wins nursery school quiz

Parents, teachers and Ministry of Education officials were yesterday given a special treat while they were part of the audience at a nursery school quiz competition. The competition was held at St Gabriel’s Nursery School as part of the programme for Education Month which was observed under the theme “Child friendly homes, child friendly classrooms, quality Education”.
The programme was chaired by Akilah Doris (Project Co-coordinator, Help and Shelter). “The development of a child is the responsibility of the school, the family and the community,” she said.
Assistant Chief Education Officer- Nursery Ms Doomattie Singh said that when a child is between the ages three and four years, people think they don’t know much. “This competition is to prove that they are very aware of what is going on around them. This is the stage where we need to mold them into what we want them to be.”
According to Singh, at the beginning of the school year teachers are now doing a diagnostic test to provide them with a better understanding of the different levels of attention each child will need.
There were nine participating schools, each represented by a student. There was Tia Chung of Precious Jewels Nursery; Keenan Richards of Lodge Nursery; Simarran Khan of Smyth Street Nursery, Shaquan Walters of Roxanne Burnham Nursery; Colwayne Jacobs of South Road Nursery; Tamera of Campbellsville Nursery; Niola Willis of Houston Nursery; Selecia Williams of St Gabriel’s Nursery; and Cassiann Benette of Bel Air Nursery.
St Gabriel’s Nursery won the competition with 60 points, followed by Precious Jewels. In third position was Lodge Nursery.
The head teacher of St Gabriel’s nursery, Roseanne Chalmers, said, “We have been rewarded for our hard work. We are satisfied”
According to Chalmers, Selecia Williams (representative of St Gabriel) “is no doubt a good performer.”
While all Schools were given certificates, schools that placed in the top three received trophies from Deputy Education Officer (DEO) nursery, Hazel Answick.
According to the Assistant Chief Education Officer, Doomattie Singh, the competition was fulfilling. It pleased her heart to see children of that age so bold and adequately educated, she said. Oslyn Benn-Caesar, member of the quiz committee, said that she was absolutely satisfied with the performance of the contestants.
According to the Chief Judge, Donna Keller-McKinnon, the contestants were very good. Parents and teachers should be encouraged to train their children to answer question in complete sentences, she added.
