Dear Editor,
On Monday September 20 my friend, a female Brazilian citizen who does not speak much English, was travelling from Cheddi Jagan International Airport with Meta Airlines on the flight to Boa Vista.
When she went through the airport security check she was routinely searched and her makeup case was opened. The female officer searched through the case and confiscated a small, half empty bottle of “J’adore” French perfume. Confused, my friend asked in Portuguese “Why are you taking this?” All the officer would say was “Money!”. After hearing the less-than-subtle demand for money several times, my friend capitulated and handed the officer G$1000, thinking this was some sort of fine or charge. With this the officer simply said “OK” and gave back the bottle.
This outrageous act by an airport security officer not only offends us, but raises doubts in our mind as to the dangers of having security staff who are willing to take bribes. Are you and I safeguarded against potential terrorist attacks when flying out of CJ International? It seems that this is not the case!
A bottle of perfume costs you $1000. But what is the going rate for an explosive device or a weapon?
Perhaps those rates should be posted at the security check point for all passengers and tourists to see.
Dr. Roger D. Morton
