Man remanded to prison for “knife point” robbery

Magistrate Priya Beharry on Thursday denied bail to a man accused of relieving two persons of articles valuing over $300,000.
The man, Stephen Piggott, while armed with a knife, is accused of robbing Shawn Rahmaya and Abena Jago of their valuables on September 22, last.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the two persons were in a motorcar on North Road when they noticed three persons standing in the middle of the road.
Telford explained that as the car approached the men, the defendant who is known to victims, ordered them to get out of the car.
The two persons complied and they were relieved of their articles. Attorney at law Adrian Thompson who represented Piggott asked for bail in a reasonable sum.
The lawyer argued that the facts of the case were a “little farfetched”. Thompson opined that the story of someone standing in the middle of the road was just absurd.
“If I were driving, why would I slow down after seeing someone in the middle of the road with a knife?” Thompson argued.
Prosecutor Telford interjected and informed the court that Piggott was recently sentenced to three yeas’ imprisonment in absentia.
The prosecutor explained that Piggott had a matter of a similar nature pending in the courts, and was sentenced in his absence. The lawyer said that he was not aware of these facts.
He asked the court to take into consideration the fact that Piggott was sentenced and also the prevalence of the offence committed.
The magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s application and Piggott was remanded to prison.
He is expected to make a second court appearance on October 18.
