The feature match-up of Thursday evening’s hockey schedule in the ongoing Banks Night Hockey Tournament saw the Hikers ‘A’ in top form as they picked apart an ill-prepared Old Fort 5-0.
Young Shaquille Assanah opened the Hikers account with a penalty corner shot just six minutes into the match to put Old Fort on the defensive for most of the opening half. With Hikers enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Akeem Thompson registered his first of a hat-trick just before the half to give the Hikers a 2-0 lead.
Old Fort’s Aderemi Simon and veteran Gavin Hope showed moments of brilliance in the second half, but Hikers continued to dominate the match and slammed home three more, two from Thompson and a single from Jerazeno Bell to complete the 5-0 victory.
Old Fort suffered a similar fate earlier in the evening when their junior boys failed to arrive on time and conceded a walk-over to the GCC Tigers. The young Hikers cadets took the field next against second division defending champs GCC ‘B’ and created the surprise upset with a double from the in-form Akeem Thompson in the 5th and 9th minute.
While GCC seemed to settle in the second half, the defensive wall of the energetic Hikers proved impenetrable and held of the charge. Hikers secured the 2-0 victory at full time, giving the Bourda boys the blues.
The final second division match saw Hikers ladies almost create an upset against their male second division counterparts Hikers Generals by sneaking in an Amanda Garnette field goal just five minutes into the match.
The Generals, however, managed to reply through Andy Gouveia, son of the former international of the same name, in the 34th minute to leave the game deadlocked at 1-1.
GCC ‘A’ and Hikers ‘A’ each share 3 points to lead the men’s first division.
Female GCC counterparts, the Tigers, lead the second division table with 6 points, followed by Hikers Cadets on 4, GCC ‘B’ with 3, Hikers Generals on 2, Hikers ladies with 1 and Old Fort ‘B’ yet to score a point.
Matches continue on Monday with Hikers ladies taking on Old Fort ‘B’, GCC ladies taking on the Hikers Cadets and GCC ‘B’ facing Hikers Generals, all in the second division competition, while the lone first division fixture pits Old Fort ‘A’ against the Hikers ‘A’ in the first match of the second round.
