– Hetmyer named Man-of-the-Match
Visitors Berbice captured the first lien on the late Colin Wiltshire Trophy after defeating Demerara by two wickets with 5.3 overs to spare in an Under-23 Cricket encounter yesterday, at the DCC ground in Queenstown.
Responding to Demerara’s 204-7 off the allotted 50 overs, Berbice replied with 207-8 in 44.3 overs.
They were led to victory courtesy of an unbeaten innings of 87 from Seon Hetmyer, whose knock included three sixes and a similar amount of fours, while Captain Eugene La Fleur supported with 35.
Anthony Bramble added 32 and pacer Keon Fraser, who stayed with Hetmyer to the end, contributed 13.
La Fleur’s knock was laced with two maximums and three boundaries, while Bramble’s innings contained five fours and a solitary six.
For Demerara, the pick of the bowlers was Kellon Carmichael, who ended with figures of 5-44 off 9 overs, while Trevon Griffith and Amir Khan each took a wicket apiece.
Earlier, Demerara won the toss and decided to take first strike and reached a respectable total due mainly to wicketkeeper Joseph Perry’s top-score of 45 which was spiced with two sixes and one four.
Wasim Haslim hammered a pugnacious 28 that included two sixes and two fours, while Elton Baker 22, Vishaul Singh 21, Travis Blyden and Andra Stoll 19 each, all made useful contributions.
Herman Latcha bagged 2-30 off 7 overs and Keon Joseph 2-44 from 5 were the best bowlers on show for Berbice.
The two teams will clash next Wednesday in Berbice for the late Leslie Amsterdam Trophy.
