The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Friday October 1st will create history when the Board in association with Beverage Giants Banks DIH Limited launches the first ever Senior Inter Zone 3-day tournament in the Ancient County.
The value of the sponsorship is approximately $1M and the competition would be named the BCB/Banks Beer Light 3-day Inter Zone Tournament and will be promoted under the theme ‘Take it Light’.
BCB Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster stated that the tournament will form a major part of the Board’s developmental programme as it would allow the players to play the game in the traditional way instead of the 50 overs and 20 over formats.
This longer format Foster disclosed would assist the batsmen especially the younger ones to develop concentration and discipline while bowlers would be forced to work harder for success. Competing for top honours will be West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne.
The Board’s Senior Selection Committee would use performances in this tournament which would be played on a round-robin to select the County’s senior team for the 4-day competition. The Board has halted the hosting of trial matches and instead has developed a new policy of the Inter Zone tournaments at each {age} level.
Senior officials of the BCB and Banks DIH Ltd. would be present at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground on Friday October 1st for the official Launching Ceremony.
First round will see West Berbice taking on New Amsterdam/Canje at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground and Lower Corentyne coming up against Central/Upper Corentyne at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground. Matches bowls off at 10:00hrs daily and ends at 17:00hrs.
