Dear Editor,
In as much as Guyana is at its lowest ebb I am encouraged that all is not lost.
A change is going to come. The country is witnessing a slow, but sure renaissance made even more evident by the diehards who are fighting their wits end to preserve the status quo.
On one side there are names like Christopher Ram, Lincoln Lewis, David Hinds, Tacuma Ogunseye, Mark Benschop, Eric Phillips, Rupert Roopnarine, Freddie Kissoon being among the en-lighteners, who I call group one. On the other hand there are names like Vishnu Bisram, Mike Persaud, Ravi Dev, Rev. Gideon who would like things to remain the same, who I call group two.
And jostling in between the two groups are the names of Emile Mervin, Michael Maxwell, Richard Van West Charles, Sasenarine Singh and Harry Gill whose belief, for the want of a better word, is not clear, who I call group 3. My exclusion of names is not intended to offend anyone but a mere observation of the ones whose views have been more frequently expressed when it hit me that something is blowing in the wind.
Group 1, I call the renaissance because one gets the sense from reading their thoughts and observing their activism that they deeply care about something outside of themselves.
The impression is given that they are driven by a mission, they want to transform society, to change things for the better that will affect all. Somehow you sense the fervour is not about them. This is not to say that you may entirely agree with everything they say and do but they offer you the sense that their views are driven by a deep rooted belief that can withstand public scrutiny.
Better said, they have a philosophy. Ram speaks out against the PPP rascality using their data against them. David Hinds has taken on the restoration of cultural pride built on ancestral legacy. Lincoln Lewis attacks injustices and inequalities using the Constitution as his bible. Mark Benschop and Freddie Kissoon expose the daily insanity.
Eric Phillips and Tacuma Ogunseye believe African equality lie in a change in the structure of government and rail against the current configuration. Rupert Roopnarine is a one man truth commission on Guyana’s past.
The common trend in all this is the fearlessness of these men when fear stalks the land and silence has become the new voice.
Group 2, is driven to entrenching the status quo of disorderliness, disrespect and fiction. They feverishly do so using various guises. They are more prone to getting personal when arguing their points and always quick to descend to the personal should their position be questioned.
They prefer the old propaganda tactics of attacking the messenger, name-calling and telling white lies. They also think that they can make it be believed that their thoughts are factual, respectful and orderly and are embraced by all.
There is no sense of selflessness and national interest and the manifestation of the ID is always present. They always say they know what is best when this is just a front for the end justifying the means.
This is why I say they confirm to the entrenchment of the status quo.
Group 3, strikes as wanting to be well meaning, but more influenced by personal hang-ups and desire to settle scores. Their dichotomy is not that they lack the ability to go outside of themselves for the national good but this is more an afterthought rather than forethought. Consequently, if needs be to justify their position they will not be too put out disregarding order, truth or respect.
The problem here is that because there is such a thin line between the inward and outward from time to time they lose the very people they are hoping to inspire because they can come across as inconsistent, dishonest or vengeful.
On the one hand wanting to change the status quo and on the other having no problem behaving like the status quo when it serves their interest. They are in constant battle with the id, ego and super-ego.
But as I said earlier, a renaissance is happening….a change is going come.
