Works Ministry employees, developer at odds over use of reserve

Officials from the Ministry of Public Works yesterday had an exchange of words with employees of popular businessman Omprakash Shivraj called ‘Buddy’ at a Good Hope, ECD, land development site.
The main issue of contention was the government’s reserve.
Two months ago, Shivraj, a well known land developer commenced work on a plot of land which was once occupied by squatters at Good Hope North, just off the main East Coast Demerara carriageway.
Since the land was prone to flooding, the developer proceeded to fill it with sand.
To facilitate this, sand was dumped at the edge of the roadway and a bulldozer was used to grade it onto the land.
But this arrangement did not find favour with the Ministry officials who swooped down on the site demanding that the developer remove several truckloads of sand from the reserve.
Although they were assured that the sand was immediately graded from the reserve, the Ministry officials using bobcats proceeded to load the sand into trucks.
There was an exchange of words but before it could get out of hand, good sense prevailed and the Ministry abandoned their intentions, but not before they had removed about two truckloads of sand.
However, later in the afternoon, employees headed by a senior engineer attached to the Works Ministry returned to the site with police. This was while the developer’s employees were removing the sand from the reserve. The Works ministry officials spent approximately 20 minutes before leaving the location.
