The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organised First Division Heroes Cup 2-Day Cricket Competition was officially launched yesterday, during a simple ceremony which was held, at Malteenoes Sports Club.
The occasion had in attendance representatives of Carib Beer Brand Co-ordinator- Nigel Worrell, Public Relations Officer- Darshanie Yussuf, GCA President-Roger Harper, Chairman of the Competitions Committee- Shawn Massiah, Chairman of the Senior Selection Panel of the GCA- Mark Harper and GCA Assistant Secretary- Theresa Pemberton.
Yussuf, who spoke on behalf of Ansa Mcal, the importers of Carib Beer said that the aim of the competition apart from aiding in the development of the game is also meant to pay homage to the former great cricketers of the past who represented both Guyana and the West Indies.
She disclosed that Carib Beer and the GCA will be working along with Friends of Cricket to ensure that Guyana continue to make an impact in WI cricket.
Harper in his remarks thanked Ansa Mcal through Carib Beer for partnering the GCA in pulling off the tournament.
“Carib Beer saw it important to partner with us to bring off this two-day tournament which I think is the bedrock of cricket development,” the GCA President stated.
He said that just as Carib Beer is usually keen to hold a high standard, the GCA, too, will strive to ensure that the tournament is run at a standard that will please the sponsors.
“When we first approached Ansa Mcal to discuss the possibility of their involvement in the tournament with Managing Director Beverley Harper, she pointed out that it would be a good idea for us to do something in memory of those great cricketers such as Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Roy Fredericks, Clive Lloyd, Alvin Kallicharran and others who had done so much for the sport here in Guyana and the West Indies hence the birth of the Heroes Cup,” Harper revealed.
He added that it is the legacy those past greats left that they would like the current crop of young cricketers to strive to emulate.
Assiah gave an outline of the format of the tournament, adding that bonus points will be given for both batting and bowling, while the competition will be played over seven weekends, starting tomorrow with three matches at various venues.
The matches scheduled are: MSC versus GNIC at GDF ground; DCC vs. TSC at DCC and Police vs. GDF at Police.
The game between Everest and GCC will not be played due to the unavailability of a ground. Starting time for all the matches is 09:30 hrs.
