Dear Editor,
Touching once more on the continuing issue of crime in our society, there is a deep contention and overriding desire, for something new, something decisive and strong, coast to coast in this land by the powers who make the law and by those who implement it, to halt the escalation of crime in all its forms.
Crime is like a multiple headed monster devouring the peace and security of our lives and tainting the image of a country and its people. The strong, bold measures to counter this diseased problem have not been put into place and its ineffectiveness can be seen in the unsolved murders, robberies, domestic violence deaths and the speeding road deaths. It is an undeniable fact that crime has its tentacles imbedded in every country in this world, but the big difference that can make and break a government and put a country in the safe zone or on the brink of disastrous ruin is the way the crime situation is handled – how brave, dedicated and focus is the security forces – how serious are the politicians, ruling and opposition to sit down as a team and work together to formulate plans, iron out measures and set wheels into motion to arrest this problem. To listen to the negative comments from citizens of other countries it bothers the mind to know that even though, crimes exist in their land they still seem to think Guyana is worse.
For someone who loves this country for all that it’s wonderful and beauty and for all it’s not, the negativity and scorn bestowed on her name really hurts, for in one’s heart you genuinely love, care and live with hopes everyday for a better tomorrow.
I will highlight, just one little incident that happened during the recent summer vacation when I took my two children and their friends to The Princess Hotel poolside. We were sitting in the lobby, in the evening, waiting for our ride home, when a good-looking gentleman, a Trinidadian, walked up to me and pleasantly asked for my help to take off his gold chain and band.
I was somewhat taken back by such a request from a strange man and he explained that he wanted to go out for a walk, but was told it’s very dangerous to do so, because robbers are lurking at every corner. I told him that’s not true, that I live here and even though robberies do happen, it’s not to that alarming extent he was being made to believe. He apologised in a nice way and said he thought I was a guest at the hotel. I wondered if he had known I was Guyanese, if he would have asked me to help him take off his jewellery? It really bothered me that a visitor was given such a bad impression of Guyana, but in my heart I knew he had a right to worry.
Hopes we can have, dreams we can dream, but in reality we need a strong security force to take control, men and women of courage, zeal and intuition, who wear the uniform and who took the oath to protect and serve. We need politicians with commitment and dedication to the citizens so as a nation we can stand proud and take our place in this world.
