A nation’s development is measured by its living standards

Dear Editor,
I recently visited Guyana and was appalled at what I saw happening to my beloved country. Some in the PPP called it progress, others described it as development, and many viewed it as improvement. But whatever it is, the fact is a nation’s development is measured by the improvement in the living standards of its people.
If as President Jagdeo says that Guyana is developing then why the vast majority of Guyanese are still in dire poverty and are getting poorer by the moment? Why the land of many waters cannot supply adequate and clean running water to its people? Where else in the Caribbean or in the world firefighters have to pump water from canals/trenches to put out fires in the city? Why do we have fire hydrants without water? Why the streets in Georgetown and its suburbs have such huge potholes? Why the drains in the city are clogged and the city stinks? What type of regime will allow hundreds of Guyanese to sleep on the city pavements? Why are there constant power outages in Guyana after more than 18 years of PPP rule? Are these developments? Even the blind would say no.
Here is the hypocrisy. While President Jagdeo gallivants around the globe promoting a clean environment, Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana is mired in dirt, filth and clogged drains. Furthermore, the discriminatory policies practiced by the PPP regime are evident almost everywhere in Guyana and raised many perturbing questions. The answers to these questions lie in a President whose actions have brought dishonour and disrespect to the office of the presidency.
His verbal assault on UG lecturer and Kaieteur News columnist Freddie Kissoon and economist and Attorney at Law Christopher Ram speak to the integrity and dignity of President Jagdeo and the office he holds. It is not too late for him to acknowledge his malady and seek therapy to correct it. Goat en bite he alone, it bite another one too.
