The national Under-19 rugby players seen going through a tacklingroutine yesterday at the National Park.
To compensate for not attending this year’s NACRA Under-19 Tournament in Bahamas in August, the Guyana Rugby Football Union has arranged a Goodwill Series for the squad against Trinidad and Tobago set for October 22 in the Twin Island Republic.
Kaieteur Sport paid a visit to the National Park yesterday where the provisional squad of 26 players were practicing under the watchful eyes of Coach Alwin Etwah and Troy Yhip.
Speaking with Etwah, he told this newspaper the team has started to intensify preparations and the players were in the process of enhancing their tackling and ball handling skills.
“Most of the players are new to the sport so it will take some time before they become reasonably efficient, so it’s a case of being patient with them right now,” Etwah stated.
He disclosed that only six players are returning from last year’s squad and according to him they’ve been leading from the front.
Etwah added that there is still some way to go in terms of their preparations, but he is optimistic that with the right attitude and commitment they could attain a level where they play competitive in T&T.
National player Elwin Chase is Etwah’s assistant and the squad is expected to be trimmed shortly before the team is scheduled to leave.
The team practices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, while they have indoor sessions on Mondays, fitness on Fridays and game simulations on Saturdays.
