Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) President Lennie Shuffler reporting that the 32nd World Volleyball Congress which was held from September 8-10 in Rome, Italy described it as the most productive and inspiring Congress he has attended.
Shuffler said that it was productive from the standpoint that he was able to address several troubling issues that was affecting volleyball in Guyana.
According to the GVF Head a special seminar was called for levels 1 and 2 National Federations, before the 1st session of the World Congress and the delegations were advised that the direction of the FIVB is willing to support the levels 1 and 2 Federations with the creation of a Development Fund and National Federations could submit project proposals for consideration and funding by the Body.
“School Volleyball, Mass Volleyball and Beach Volleyball are high priority for FIVB,” Shuffler stated.
This according to him was evident and a Press Release from the Ministry of Education/Guyana Volleyball Federation Teachers Coaching Course was featured at the seminar where it highlighted the collective effort of FIVB/GVF/Ministry of Education/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport in staging a successful teachers training course.
The President of the GVF submitted a proposal for a Nationwide Schools Programme that could see an increased number of male and female school teams that could then feed the under-16, under-19, Inter-Guiana Games teams, club teams and national teams in a progressive manner.
“With the collective effort shown by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and National Sport Commission in collaboration with the GVF and the anticipated support from FIVB, volleyball can make huge strides,” Shuffler noted.
At a meeting with CSV and Brazilian President Dr Ary Graca, the GVF President once again highlighted the high cost attached to attending CSV activities and his Brazilian counterpart agreed to work on strategies that could help reduce the cost for Guyana’s participation.
“The Bloc Development Plan was discussed with CSV and Suriname President Cairo with positive results. Communication with Suriname, Cayenne and Guyana will be set up shortly in order to get the Inter Guiana Federation Games back on stream,” Shuffler continued.
He related that did not attend the Congress to beg for funds, but rather to beg for understanding and support for mutually agreed projects that can boost the development of volleyball in Guyana.
“At the Congress I found that understanding in FIVB particularly the Technical Director, who has always encouraged our participation in FIVB’s Volleyball Cooperation Programmes. This along with the promised support from CSV President Dr. Graca is certainly motivating to carry on and to see volleyball in Guyana make giant strides in the game’s development.”
