…victims recover loot
This week was not a good one for some armed bandits. Two more were caught by angry residents, yesterday, this time at Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown.
Two men, one of whom was armed with a gun, were captured around daybreak, yesterday, by residents and police who were joined by relatives of the robbery victims.
They gave their addresses as Oleander Gardens and Da Silva Street, Newtown.
Two masked gunmen broke into the house of Dhanrajie and Ramdeo Ramdin, located at 274 Fourth Field, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, around 03:00 hours yesterday.
The couple operates the Ramdin and Sons Grocery store.
Mrs. Ramdin told this newspaper that she was asleep in the front bedroom with her son, Vijay Ramdin, while her husband was in the back bedroom when she heard a crashing sound.
“I heard this loud noise and right away I know something wrong. I know it wasn’t dem cat on de roof. Right away I get up and by the time I reach outside in de hall two men hold me up.”
The woman recalled that as soon as she and her son exited the bedroom she was greeted by two masked men, one of whom was armed with a gun and the other with a knife. She added that she and her son immediately started to shout for thief.
“Dey tell we shut up and to lie on de floor. Right away, I go on de floor but me son left standing up and one ah dem lash he in he head with a gun.”
The woman said that she then started pleading with her son to comply with the men, which he eventually did. She added that her husband then joined them on the floor.
“Dey start asking for de money and I tell dem wheh all de money deh because I didn’t want dem hurt anybody.”
The business woman said that after directing the men to all the money and the jewellery one of the men removed a gold chain from her son’s neck. Once the men were satisfied with what they had collected they fled.
However after fleeing their victim’s house the thieves never expected what followed.
After the men fled the house they began running up the road shouting for thief, with one of their victims in hot pursuit. The victim was also shouting.
By this time the entire area was alerted and people came out of their homes to pick up the chase. Shortly after, the other victims contacted the police and their relatives, some from as far as Mahaica.
According to Mrs. Ramdin her neighbours formed a search party for the men because they knew that they were still in the area.
“Everybody come out. Police from all over come out and people start weeding de trench since like four dis morning because we know that they went in de trench.”
The woman said while the men were weeding the trench and the sun started to come up the police became impatient and indicated that they wanted to leave.
“We beg dem. We say that these men deh right here. We beg them to give we li’l more time,” one resident said. The residents were also in the process of locating a Hymac to clear the trench.
“Like couple minutes after, a man find a piece a cloth which de men dem use fuh tie dem face. Then we confirm dat dem deh in de trench.”
One resident said one man entered the trench and started weeding close to where the cloth was found and it was at that point that both men jumped out of the water.
“All two a dem jump up and dem start fighting but was too much people around dem so dem give up and then get a sound trashing,” one resident recalled. The men were then handed over to the police who escorted them to the Sparendaam Police Station. The firearm a .38 revolver that was used to commit the robbery was recovered.
One haversack contained cash, and a shirt containing more cash, four cellular phones, a gold chain and other jewellery were also recovered in the trench. This newspaper was also told that several other improvised weapons were found in a haversack one of the men was carrying.
Up to press time the men were still in police custody assisting with investigation.
