The police have arrested hire car driver, Ameer Ali, 30, of 30 Edinburgh, East Bank Demerara for colliding with pedal cyclist Gary Haynes around 13:40 hrs on Tuesday on Main Street, New Amsterdam.
At the time of the accident, Ali was at the wheels of motor car HB3717 which struck Haynes while he was a stones throw from the Central Police Station, New Amsterdam. Kaieteur News understands that the car was being driven at a fast rate in a southerly direction when it collided with Haynes who was attempting to cross the road. The collision sent the pedal cyclist flying through the air before landing on the road with a thud.
Haynes, 39, of Lot 3 Main and King Streets, New Amsterdam and a former employee of GPL, was a mere one corner away from his home when the accident occurred.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition, bleeding profusely from gashes about the head and other parts of the body and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital, where he was attended to and immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The driver remains in police custody while the car has been impounded with a damaged windscreen and front bumper.
And in another accident the police have detained a taxi driver as they investigate an accident which occurred around 18:40 hrs on Monday.
Prison officer Simone Archer, 37, attached to the New Amsterdam prison and a resident of lot 23 Section F De Edward, West Coast Berbice, was reportedly struck by a hit a run driver.
The woman who was on her way home was riding her motorcycle CF2221 in the vicinity of the Canje Bridge when a speeding car, which continued on its way, hit her from behind.
She was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital, a short distance away, where she was treated and sent away. However when she arrived at home she complained of feeling unwell and was returned to the New Amsterdam hospital where she remains a patient.
The taxi driver was arrested after a description of the car was given to the police. However, the driver has given an alibi and is denying that he was involved in any accident.
