Lack of funds and late booking are main factors
Guyana’s Body Builders who were selected to represent their country at the 38th IFBB Central American & Caribbean (CAC) Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships set for this weekend in Palm Beach, Aruba had to involuntarily wave the Championships goodbye.
President of the Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation Fiona Harris commented: “The trip is not possible at this time. While we were able to accumulate decent funding for the trip, flights are not available.
We are however thankful to Giftland Office Max, Decor and Gift Gallery, DeSinco Trading and Fitness Express for their contributions.”
The GABBFF had selected an 8-member team last Thursday following their senior championships which were held at the National Cultural centre on Sunday September 12, 2010.
The athletes who were selected were Mr. Guyana Clint Duke who also won the Welterweight class. Heavyweight winner Oswin Jones; Lightweight champ and 2009 CAC silver medalist Marlon Bennett; Curtis McKenzie (2010 Fitness champion); Bantamweight king Devon Davis and Rudolph Blackman was selected to compete in the Under-21 category.
Reigning Miss Guyana Alisha Fortune who placed 5th on debut at last year’s CAC championships last year in Grenada and Kescia Beaton (Miss Guyana runner-up) were the female representatives.
Ever since the selection of the team, the athletes were in a rush to garner funds to make the trip and it came down to just a few being able to muster the required amount.
Harris further commented: “We have however decided that the athletes selected for CAC will form the Guyana contingent at the upcoming Darcy Beckles competition in Barbados on November 20, this we anticipate should be easier to fund.”
The Barbados Show will feature three categories, Open Figure – Women, Open Show – Men and the Darcy Beckles Invitational Classic.
The last year Guyana was unable to send a contingent to the CAC Championships was back in 2008.
