Dear Editor,
When Camptown’s Nigel Powers Codrington sent Guyana ahead against Guadeloupe at the GCC on November 26, 2006 in the Group H play off of the Digicel Caribbean Cup Championship the Power Striker became the leading Guyanese International goal scorer in a Calendar Year.
The goal was Codrington’s eighth in 2006 and in the process he surpassed Thomas United’s Deon Barnwell who scored seven International goals for the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls during the year 1987.
Codrington’s Record run started when the scored in a two-one victory against Antigua and Barbuda at Mackenzie Sports Club in a friendly International April 25, 2006. His second goal was against St. Lucia at GFC July 31, 2006 in another friendly International Guyana won 2-0.
Goals number three and four came against Suriname in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Preliminary round at the Ergilio Hato Stadium Williemstad Curacao, Guyana won 5 nil on September 7, 2006.
Goals five and six were against the Netherlands Antilles at the same venue September 9, 2006 as Guyana won 5 nil. Goal 7 came against Antigua and Barbuda at the GCC Bourda November 24, 2006 in group H played off of the Digicel Caribbean Cup, Guyana won 6 nil.
Goals eight and nine came against Guadeloupe November 26, 2006 GCC in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Group H play off, Guyana won 3-2.
Goal number 10 came against Dominican Republic at the GCC Bourda in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Group H playoff November 28, 2006, Guyana won 4 Nil.
Deon Barnwell during 1987 had International goals against the Bahamas in Nassau January 23, a double, Guyana won the Olympic qualifier 3-1.
He scored another double January 24 against St. Lucia in the Castries International friendly, Guyana won 3-1. His third consecutive double enabled Guyana to draw with Barbados March 21, 2-2 at the National Stadium in Bridgetown in an International friendly.
His seventh and final goal in 1987 was against Grenada in an International Friendly at Mackenzie Sports Club ground. Guyana won 3 nil.
For the records Barnwell was only 17 years old when he scored his seven international goals in a calendar year, the feat included three consecutive doubles all registered overseas (Bahamas) (St. Lucia) and (Barbados).
Could CONCACAF say if Dwight Yorke, Russell Latapy, Jerren Nixon, Onandi Lowe, Walter Boyd, Etal international exploits at 17yrs is more illustrious than Deon Barnwell’s.
