National Michael Parris Open boxing champion Eon Bancroft will face off with Republican Boxing Gym representative, Alfred Benjamin when the action in the amateur segment of the eight ProAm boxing extravaganza gets underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall tomorrow evening.
Benjamin’s gym mate, Daneshwar Narine will match gloves with Dexter ‘Chucky’ Wray in a junior/flyweight encounter while Laured Stuart and Ron Smith battle it out in a highly anticipated welterweight affair. In the final bout of the amateur segment, Light/heavyweight champion of the National Michael Parris Open boxing championships, Markember Pierre will face off with Republican boxer, Trelon Munroe.
The boxers appeared at the pre-fight press conference staged in the studios of the National Communications Network (NCN), Tuesday evening last and all looked fit and ready for combat.
Meanwhile, coordinator of the amateur bouts, Terrence Poole admitted that the boxers have shown distinct improvement ever since the inauguration of the ProAm boxing cards. He said that these boxers are cognizant of the fact that they would have to merit their selection to fight on the card and as such they are diligently applying themselves to their work. The concomitant result is marked improvement in the quality of bouts. Mr. Poole also attributed the boxers’ recent good showing at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games to the ProAm initiative. He said that the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) are currently engaged in activities aimed at acknowledging the input of past stalwarts. He pointed to the recent Open boxing championships, rechristened in honour of this country’s lone Olympic medalist, Michael Parris.
Poole also pointed out that the Novices boxing championships has been renamed to honour the late Andrew Murray, a former world rater and local amateur champion who died in a car accident on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway a few years ago.
Added to that, GABA selection committee has released the names of the boxers and officials that will travel to India sometime next week to participate in the Commonwealth Games. The squad will be led by lightweight, Clevon Rock, a recent silver medalist at the Junior Boxing Championships, also staged in India.
Two other pugilists, CAC bronze medalists, flyweight, Dexter Jordon and middleweight, Devon Boatswain will be managed by Steve Ninvalle and coached by Terrence Poole. The team leaves Guyana early next week.
