Boxing buffs anticipating an action packed encounter in the Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman/Kwesi Jones 4 rounds middleweight scrap in the 8th edition of the ProAm boxing card, are assured of added excitement following the inclusion of overseas based Guyanese boxer, Sean Corbin, who will pit his skills against Leon ‘The Lion Gilkes, in a 4 rounds heavyweight contest.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool had hinted of the fight at an earlier press conference but confirmation came late yesterday afternoon after negotiations between the two sides were completed.
Corbin is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC), Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) light/heavyweight champion and is based in Trinidad and Tobago. He boasts a professional record of 9 wins with only one loss. In his last fight, staged on Saturday April 24 at the Central Indoor Regional Auditorium, Chaguanas, Trinidad And Tobago, Corbin had defeated Barbadian Cleveland Fraser inside 5 rounds of their scheduled 10 rounds light/heavyweight scrap to retain the above CABOFE championship. He is expected in Guyana at around 13:00hrs today and will be accompanied by his manager/coach, Barbadian, Sam Layne.
Meanwhile, Gilkes, who needs no introduction to the Guyanese public, says that he is ready for combat. He had resumed training after defeating Theophilus King for the second time in a row in the seventh edition of the ProAm extravaganza last month. He is in kittle shape and is confident that he could overcome Corbin.
Indeed, Gilkes has become a fixture on the ProAm boxing cards and has been engaged in several action packed encounters. Corbin, on the other hand, is no slouch and will be out to prove that he has benefited immensely from his overseas sojourn.
The bout would complement four others when Debbie Tyson attempts to avenge an earlier loss to Pauline London. Clive Atwell will also face off with Mark Austin in the lightweight division while debutants Gavin Williams and Simeon Hardy would battle in the junior/middleweight division in the night’s curtain raiser.
Patrons are also advised that the price of admission will now be one thousand dollars. The promoters have disclosed that the increase is necessary to defray the astronomical costs attached to the card. Further, copies of the previous fight cards would be on sale for a small fee of five hundred dollars. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
