Ruby Wilkinson celebrated her 100th birthday at the Palms Geriatric Home yesterday.
The sturdy Wilkinson has been living at the Palms for the last five years and is one of its eldest occupants.
The bouncy centenarian revealed that she previously lived in the village of Buxton on the East Coast Demerara where she attended church regularly.
Adding that she eats healthily and only experiences pains in her knees, Ms Wilkinson said that she was a businesswoman in her younger years and was a hard worker. She gave praises to God for her longevity and her senses being enacted at her age.
The centenarian advised that persons should eat healthily and exercise, since this is a receipe for a long life.
“I like skipping and jumping; anything that come I does take; how life come I live it.”
And according to Ms Wilkinson, she has no children and her husband died a very long time ago.
According to Probation Officer of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Irene Thomas, on the last Friday of every month the birthdays’ of the elderly in the home are celebrated.
Next month is designated as “Month of the Elderly” to give special recognition to senior citizens across Guyana.
And senior citizens in the Palms would be treated to various activities within the month of October.
