Yesterday, some nine days after the vicious slaying of Deon Stephens, the police issued a bulletin for the alleged perpetrator, Stephens’s reputed husband, 32-year-old Leon Clifton Robinson. According to the police, Robinson, whose last known addresses have been listed as Vigilance Squatting Area and Lot 143 Friendship, East Coast Demerara, is dark in complexion, medium built and is 169cm in height.
Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Leon Clifton Robinson is asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-2700, 226-2917, 226-1326, 226-2870, 225-6941 or 911 or the nearest police station. Just hours after packing her things and moving out to escape an abusive relationship, Stephens, a 31-year-old security guard, was brutally murdered at her mother’s Vigilance South, East Coast Demerara home, shortly after 22:00 hrs, on Monday, September 13. Stephens was reportedly cornered outside while taking a bath and stabbed in the chest, neck and right breast. Relatives of the deceased have opined that the police are doing little to apprehend the suspect, but the lawmen have indicated that they are checking every lead that is available to them to ensure that Stephens’s killer is brought to justice. Initially, the police had received reports of the murder suspect’s body lying in the Buxton backlands and at least two treks were made to the area but no trace of the man was found. “The police are not psychics. We have checked every lead, we checked the backlands and we will continue to do so until he is found,” a source at the Vigilance Police Station told this newspaper. The source said that as recent as Tuesday, ranks made checks at the home of the man’s mother. “We heard that he was by his mother’s place and we checked. We even heard that he sleeps at a particular house but we came up nil,” the source said, adding that searches were also made at the Sophia home of the suspect’s brother. Investigators are also checking to ascertain if the suspect has left the jurisdiction. They are reportedly contemplating proceeding with murder charges against the suspect in his absence. The advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions has already been sought.
