Dear Editor,
It is redundant with all the previous letters written on the state of education in Guyana, for me to highlight the ineptitude of the administrators of education in order to put in context another of higher merit.
I had the good fortune to inter-act and partner with Professor Daizal Samad (Director of the Berbice Campus of the University of Guyana (UG), in some recent activities dealing not only with education, but other civic duties.
Berbice has been blessed over the years with many outstanding persons in academia, but none who seem so suited to teaching and the administration of education at the highest level as Professor Samad. Rarely, are such distinguished persons found to be as humble as the common man, completely devoid of bigotry and airs.
He has accomplished much including exposing police recruits to a university environment.
The impact on their minds could only be positive and can motivate them to strive to attend such an institution in the future.
Recapping his many deeds and the chronicling of such, I leave to those who are more eloquently gifted and who like me, has partaken of the wealth of goodness from this finest of gentlemen.
His worth to his country, the education field and to his peers must be recognised and rewarded accordingly. It is there for anyone to see not just an average Joe like yours truly. Just visit Rose Hall Town or the Tain Campus.
With this said, it behoves me to plead with those who matter, not to let this fine son of the soil ever leave these shores again to ply his trade away from where it is most needed – our beloved Guyana.

Computer for every child
Dear Editor,
Excellent! Who could disagree with the initiative that every schoolchild should have a laptop computer?
May I suggest however, that these laptops be strong enough for children to take them to school and use them for seats and desks, since there seems to be a severe shortage of the most essential tools in schools.
Parents bring your desk and bench! We will give your child a computer!
When will those teachers be paid, who worked during the summer vacation doing remedial work with our less-than- literate children?
I hope the “free” computers would be loaded with appropriate software for remedial work, since next summer only computers would be doing the teaching.
Talk about cart before the horse.
