Dear Editor,
While I recall James Mc Allister and Richard Van West Charles making claims to Stabroek News that the PNC elections were fraudulent and Robert Corbin must go, some have now seen it as their mission to accomplish.
Reading these agent provocateurs the more they write the more bizarre their arguments become. Mike Persaud thinks “The fight in the PNCR is not limited to a disputed election; it is about reform of the party” (KN September 21) when there is no disputed election in the PNC and he has thus far demonstrated no knowledge of how the PNC works.
Rather he is more interested in dictating to the party from a position of utter ignorance. Harry Gill now says “The laws of the PNCR are not paramount to those of the Constitution of Guyana” (KN September 21) when he himself has demonstrated his total ignorance of the PNC’s laws, and the role of people as members of society versus members of a organization.
The society has descended to such low that might now becomes right and bullyism parades as advocacy. On asking for reform of the Guyana Constitution, Robert Corbin and any member of society can call on the government at any time to make constitutional changes. This is so because they are members and owners of the society and by virtue of this should have continued vested interest in what’s taking place in society.
A government is the custodian of the state and servant of its people and should respond to the people’s wishes. The PNC is an organization that has members and should there be need for change only they can request the change. Here are two very important factors that cannot be ignored:
For a change in the Guyana Constitution the members of society, including the political parties, are allowed to utilize different strategies including street protests, votes, letter writing, political representation and other processes to get that change which can ultimately be realised by following some established procedures.
Gill’s reference to Corbin’s actions confirm to what he, Corbin, is allowed to do as a member of society and politician.
Likewise, for the PNC, any change has to come from its members who too have to follow processes and procedures outlined in the rules. I refuse to believe Gill and Persaud cannot comprehend these basic processes and procedural factors. I am more inclined to believe that they are bullies hoping that if they carry on long enough the PNC will succumb to their bullyism or the society will accept it.
The writers started out accusing the PNC of rigged congressional elections. When provided with the evidence that Messrs Murray and Corbin accepted the results and the report from Returning Officer, Mr. Harmon, they became confused about what they will argue about now.
So the new argument to continue trashing the PNC became ‘the rules must be changed.’ When told that changing rules requires being a member and following procedures outlined in the rules to effect such change they are now saying ignore the procedures.
If they want to influence what happens in the party let them become a member and follow the rules or go form a party of their own and do as they like.
Clearly this is not about the PNC; this is about what they want and only on their terms. While they think they can bully the PNC they know that by living in the USA they have to follow the rules or they be sanctioned. They may be enjoying the fact that under the PPP government respect for rules are eroding everyday so they think they can cash in on the PNC but it won’t happen.
If the PNC has to be the last one standing for holding firm to rules it will be. Gill and Persaud came knocking on the wrong door; their lawlessness will not be accommodated.
