In what would be considered a perfect day for golf the Caribbean Golfers of America (CGA) hosted their first annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Tournament on September 18 at the newly revitalized Marine Park Golf Course in Flatbush Brooklyn.
With the temperature in the upper seventy degrees and bright sunny skies, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago teed off in a highly competitive spirit.
The competition was played in a Ryder Cup stroke-play format with 12 players from each country. Three points was awarded to the player with the lowest gross score in each group 2 points for second and 1 point for third place.
With a large number of spectators on hand team Guyana emerged champions following the final tally of the scorecards. In a very close battle Team Guyana were declared the winner with a total of 22 points and the right to lift the inaugural cup that was sponsored by Marine Park Golf Course, Team Trinidad & Tobago came in 2nd with 20 points, followed by Team Jamaica with 17 points and Team Barbados rounded out the tournament with 13 points.
Norman Young of Trinidad & Tobago was on top form with his ball striking, firing the low round of 74, followed closely by Team Guyana’s Karl Ramjeet, who shot 78, to help Guyana to secure the victory.
The sponsors came in for high praise after their contributions which made the event a resounding success as the players are excited about next year tournament.
The players were treated to a wonderful dinner that at Marine Park Golf Course Restaurant and Bar. The dinner was also made possible by the many sponsors including SBB Freight, Inc., Caribbean News Now, Sybil’s Restaurant & Bakery, Queens Autronics, R&L Woodworking, Marine Park Golf course, F1 Lounge Restaurant & Bar, BrisO Promotions, Mr. Copy King, Solutions HVAC Services Inc., Quality Refinishing, LLC and Shanto Group.
Captain of the Guyana team Mark Woseley stated in thanking all who participated, “On behalf of the Caribbean Golfers of America (CGA) I want to extend heart-felt thanks to all of our sponsors for your commitment in making this event so successful. As we continue to grow as an organization, please know that partnerships with our sponsors are vital to the success of the Caribbean Golfers of America (CGA) you are truly appreciated.”
Woseley told Kaieteur Sport that several other events have been planned for the very near future and the details of this will be released shortly.
