The Day of Interaction organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with the officials of the National Sports Commission and Region # 6 Administration and staged on Sunday September 19 last, was deemed a success after droves of supporters from New Amsterdam and up to Siparuta in the Corentyne River braved all circumstances to participate in activities which were held at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground.
A release from the organizers revealed that sixteen Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and three Municipalities of Region #6 accompanied by officials assembled for the march past which started at around 09:30hrs.Several high leveled government officials also formed a part of the huge crowd that witnessed the proceedings.
Those in attendance included Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King, Director of Sports, Neil Kumar, Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, Regional Culture, Youth and Sport Officer, Omeshwar Sirikishun, PPP General Secretary and Member of Parliament, Mr. Donald Ramotar, Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee and other Regional Officers.
Activities were staged at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground and patrons began assembling from around 09:00hrs.
At the end of the march past, the Port Mourant Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) copped all three prizes at stake for the best banner, uniformity and the largest contingent, respectively.
Meanwhile, officials explained that the Day of Interaction, initially staged to unite communities, is achieving its objective. They expressed satisfaction at the large turnout from the various NDCs and municipalities. The organizers further pledged to support sports activities in the region. The gathering was also entertained when the Port Mourant Marshal Arts Group treated them to a classical display.
All of the activities were intriguing and held the interest of the spectators who all stayed to the end when participants were presented with sports gears and other equipment.
Meanwhile, 18 teams participated in the Male softball cricket match which was eventually won by Whim/Bloom Field NDC who defeated Madia/Tarlogie NDC in a closely contested match. Macedonia/Joppa NDC females won from Crab Wood Creek NDC in a game which went down to the wire.
In the Volleyball match Port Mourant Training Centre defeated Jaguars of also of Port Mourant in the final while Letter Kenny finished in the third place. The table tennis competition attracted 20 entries including one female, Geneane Kellman who received a special prize. In the junior category, Brydon Murray was the champion with Joshua Lalbachan taking the second position. Both of these players are from New Amsterdam while in the senior category first place went to Shurwain Sahdeo and second place to Ian Bagot, both of Port Mourant.
Twenty two participants entered for the chess competition and former national champion, Kriskal Persaud prevailed after amassing a flawless five points. Dane Grimmond finished second with four points.
No. 28 Bush Lot/ Adventure emerged as the champions in the domino tournament from a lineup of fourteen teams. Macedonia/ Joppa placed second.
The football competition had to be aborted after the organizers were unable to entertain all of the matches. However, all of the teams were presented with one football each.
In other results of the other disciplines, Corriverton Town Council defeated Port Mourant Training Centre in the circle tennis match while Mahadeo Seusankar emerged the winner in the draughts competition. Samaroo placed second.
Nine athletes faced the starter’s lineup in the 800m Female Albert, Toneisha Solomon and Geleica Stanley occupied the first three positions while in the 1500m Female Open, Toneisha Solomon prevailed while Geleica Stanley finished second.
Seven athletes faced the starter’s gun in the 800m Male Open and in the end Piere Tello brought first followed by Dwayson Watson and James Rahaman.
Arsenio Gray easily won the 1500m Male Open after his colleagues opted out.
