Miner charged with murder
Almost one month after he allegedly doused businessman Charles Garraway with gasoline and set him alight, 28-year-old gold miner Sheldon Grant was yesterday not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder when the charge was read to him by Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that between August 20 and 21, at Oku Landing, Cuyuni River, Grant murdered Garraway.
Grant who suffered severe burns about the body, stood silently as the charge was being read to him. A bandage covered his right ear.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, Garraway had accused Grant of stealing a DVD player. According to Telford, the two began arguing, and Grant threatened to burn Garraway.
Telford further told the court that, feeling offended, it was Garraway who picked up a cutlass and dealt him a blow to the head.
Grant, according to the prosecution, left and returned with a bottle of gasoline, the contents of which he doused Garraway with and set him alight.
The prosecutor further told the court that Garraway was rushed to the hospital where he died the next day.
Grant who also suffered injuries was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where he was admitted as a patient in the Burns Care Unit, up until his discharge.
Telford made the application for the matter to be transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for trial.
That application was granted and the accused is expected to make his second court appearance on October 27.
Reports from the police stated that Garraway and Grant had an argument over payment for groceries bought from the businessman’s shop. During the argument, it is alleged that Grant threw gasoline on Garraway and lit him afire.
