Dear Editor,
Guyana is a strange place for listening to a newscast on a research on women and children; a collaboration between UNICEF and the Ministry of Human Services, September 16,2010.
Having listened to that newscast I will reiterate “Guyana is a strange place”.
My question to Ms. Manickchand is, “Why should the media join hands with you? Is it to be in parliament with you for the next five years, to see if the Child Protection Bill will pass?”
Let me remind you the “MEDIA IS AN INDEPENDENT BODY.”
Guess you would not understand this notion, since the three arms of the State are extremely intertwined.
The facts are the facts; the media will report on information they receive. I felt sorry for you and that researcher. I’m still trying to understand the hypothesis of that research.
A couple of points to note:
1. I can identify with the media; during my years at the University of Guyana I was always passionate about women issues, therefore I did two research projects in the following areas: (a) Teenage Pregnancy (b) Women and poverty.
Sad to say, I wasn’t able to pick up any published statistical data on these two major issues in our country, from your ministry. Ms. Manickchand, without data we are unable to effect change in a positive direction. This, I think, will more than inform the media.
2. Your agency needs to commit to activities that will enhance the development of women in a holistic manner and not the vocational training programme we have at present and which has not even impacted on the masses.
3. You need to revisit the critical role of social institutions for the development of any country.
4. You must understand what is happening to women in this country, speaks to a larger problem than the media; but I will advise you read articles on “ Characteristics of a failed State”.
Finally you may be better off doing a research with Dr. Ruth Feder, Domestic Violence Specialist, U.S.
