The Guyana Book Foundation, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations and in observance of Education Month in September, has donated over ten thousand (10,000) supplementary reading books and teachers’ resource materials to primary and secondary schools.
According to a release from the entity, 85 primary and 18 secondary schools have benefitted from the locally-published, Caribbean and North American books. Schools in three regions – West Berbice (5), Cuyuni-Mazaruni (7) and Upper Demerara-Berbice (10) – were targeted to receive the books.
The Foundation’s ‘Mission Statement’ is to improve literacy among children in Guyana and it was stated that this year’s donation is in keeping with that commitment. The Foundation also encouraged the schools to strengthen their library holdings through the recent acquisitions so that more children are attracted to reading outside their normal text books.
It was noted that later in ‘Education Month,’ the Foundation will hold a skills training workshop for new library assistants. They will manage their community libraries in Kamarang, Capoey Lakes, Karasabai and Hotoquai.
The Guyana Book Foundation was established in 1990 as a non-governmental organisation. Together with its partners, the Foundation provides low-cost or no-cost books, reading material and other educational resources and services for the benefit of children.
